MerGe 8/10 excellent offering from gifted songwriter katie crutchfield With the terrific grunge-pop of “No Question” and synthy tragic centrepiece “Recite Remorse”, this fourth album is another step forward for Waxhatchee, who have expanded on their lo-fi origins without ever losing that powerful sense of self provided by songwriter and band leader Katie Crutchfield. Allison, Katie’s twin sister, who recently released her excellent solo debut Tourist In This Town, also contributes here – and also features in the lyrics of gorgeous reverie “Sparks Fly” – but this is Katie’s show. Songs are steeped in creeping ’90s guitar with earcatching lyrics, plus a sense of vibrancy that comes from the fact Crutchfield really does have something to say.
