PAUL DRAPER

Spooky Action 8/10

UNCUT - - New Albums - Long-delayed debut from former mansun frontman PeTer WaTTS

Paul Draper started working on Spooky Action in 2003 when Mansun folded. A decade later, he revisited old demos and began pulling together this growling electro-rock odyssey with a misanthropic undertone (“Jealousy Is A Powerful Emotion”; “You Don’t Really Know Someone Until You Fall Out With Them”), built on a grand scale. There are occasional moments of poppy levity, like the energetic “Feel Like I Wanna Stay”, but otherwise this has an impressive heft: “Friends Make The Worst Enemies” shares the epic qualities of a Bond theme, while “Who’s Wearing The Trousers” has a Krautrock-meets-Pet Shop Boys vibe.
