Crooked Calypso 7/10

UNCUT - - New Albums I’m New Here - Smart, subversive MoR JoHN lEWIS

No-one writes with such wince-inducing accuracy about their target audience as this former Beautiful South pairing. These are songs addressed to middle-aged alcoholics on their second or third marriages, be they lovelorn romantics, adulterers or “The Fat Man” whose faceless body features on news footage about obesity. The Philly disco of “He Wants To” is an amusing warning about predatory men, while “Blackwater Banks” is a hymn to Ireland to rival “Fairytale Of New York”.
