SHELBY LYNNE & ALLISoN MooRER Not Dark Yet
Country siblings finally make an album together
On their first record together, Lynne and Moorer – by now veterans of both the country mainstream and its margins – cover nine songs ranging from the usual suspects (the Louvin Brothers, Merle Haggard) to the unusual (The Killers, Nick Cave). Their voices blend beautifully, especially on Dylan’s title track and Jason Isbell’s “The Color Of A Cloudy Day”, but they caterwaul awkwardly on an unintentionally silly version of Nirvana’s “Lithium”. Their lone co-write, “Is It Too Much”, points toward a solid set of originals on the horizon.
