ACTRESS X THE LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA
Techno doyen’s classical dalliance
Dance music and orchestras are having a wretched time thanks to the pipe’n’slippers renditions of Ibiza and Haçienda classics, so it’s encouraging to hear Actress’ Darren Cunningham making the most of his relationship with the LCo, which began with a Barbican Centre collaboration two years ago. Cunningham seldom takes the easy way out – the sounds for this project were inspired by the architectural layout of the Barbican – and here uses the LCo’s stems to try his hand at Xenakis-style brutalism, most successfully on “Momentum”. Elsewhere, the conventional sound palette leads to a number of fragrant compositions, which will do Actress’ cold, hard image no good at all.
