Veterans sound renewed on anthem-filled collaboration

Hooking up with Peter Buck has inspired Joseph Arthur to pull a 180, as the empathetic rhythm-guitar master nudges his partner from the knotty introspection of Arthur’s recent albums to life-embracing uplift. Buck’s chiming acoustic pattern on opener “I Am The Moment” echoes the sylvan glory of REM’s Out Of Time, setting up the LP’s prevailing theme of hopeful anticipation. Arthur stacks his vocals throughout, while his arching guitars, concussive programmed drums and resounding handclaps interlock with Buck’s springy rhythm beds, bringing an intoxicating, Bowieesque fullness to the strutting “Are You Electrified?” and the swelling “Forever Falling” – a fervent, likely self-directed pep talk focused on facing down despair.
