Last Night 6/10
Gritty lament to London’s disappearing club culture
Fabric’s near-death experience caught the headlines, but the number of nightclubs in London halved between 2012-2017. Gentrification has been ravenous, and this electronic trio have witnessed that transformation with a growing sense of exasperation. Their second LP lives in those nights out, but it’s no saccharine recollection. In these stories of exhilarating escapism, there are bad pills (“Long Way Home”) and jobsworth bouncers (“All Smoke no Fire”) all set to a grubby musical backdrop that recalls The Streets and Ghostpoet. Where once were “chat-up lines and stairwells” (“Take Me There”), beige luxury apartments now stand.
