As Long As I Have You 6/10
West London soul boy looks back
Daltrey was buying 45s before soul was named, so this collection of covers and a couple of originals is another side of maximum R&B. The Garnet Mimms title track is from the Who foundation year of 1964, and roars out of the traps like “5.15”, their primal Mod reminiscence. Parliament’s “Get On Out Of The Rain” benefits from a screaming Townshend solo, and his old sparring partner adds guiding guitar touches almost throughout. Daltrey’s own “Always Heading Home” draws on his meningitis scare in 2015, but his voice isn’t built for such poignancy. This is a 74-year-old’s dance record, not an elegy.
