Pink Noise 7/10

Swedes rebrand pink as the new black

Given their name, and a track called “Darklands”, there are limited surprises on this Malmö trio’s succinct debut, except perhaps that two bandmembers are male. Fuelled by gloomy guitars and reverb-laden atmospherics of the kind favoured when The Jesus And Mary Chain’s second album was released, it’s also indebted, especially on “Almost Happy”, to early Cocteau Twins, though it’s notably less ethereal. “Overrated” tosses in traces of Disintegration-era Cure, with Matilda Bogren’s dreamy vocals buried deep in a richly murky, shoegaze-friendly mix, while “Apart” leans towards the gothic and “Hard Ending” adds a little New Order.
