Je Suis Une Île 7/10
swooning, prog-pop debut, drifting in from Paris
Part of an underground of wistful, dreamwork French pop, Maud Nadal’s debut album is a slow burner, but also an unexpected gem. At first blush, it’s clotted with period-piece electro textures, but deeper listens reveal a peculiarly compelling, progpop heart. And while on occasion it loses its footing with some simplistic dreampop-by-numbers, there are plenty of unexpected, inspired touches, like the sea-swoon of “Dans La Nuit”, which sails out on threads of distinctly Robert Wyatt-esque keyboards. It makes perfect sense that she’s friends with Melody’s Echo Chamber: their best music is beautifully unmoored, adrift.
