Magnificent comeback from the Fourth World pioneer

For Jon Hassell, it seems nothing is impossible. A former student of Stockhausen (along with future members of Can), Hassell played on the original recording of Terry Riley’s “In C”. Since then, his own richly experimental work has been complemented by collaborations with Brian Eno, David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel and other such kindred spirits. Listening To Pictures is Hassell’s first album since 2009 and features his characteristic experiments unifying world music, minimalism and electronics. Highlights – there are many – include “Ndeya”, where Hassell’s electronically treated trumpet sits alongside Hermann-esque strings on a bed of twitchy, electronic glitches. Masterful.
