Bonus wild ramblings from the selfie-age Andrew WK

“Sex sex sex sex” chants John Maus on angst-ridden oldie “1987”, but whatever forces drive the Minnesotan would seem to stem from way above the waist. The swollen appendix to 2017’s Screen Memories, outtakes selection Addendum was a bonus LP in the recent vinyl-only anthology of Maus’s perverse techno-goth output, but its apocalyptic instrumentals and moody close-ups have been rightfully deemed strong enough to walk alone on CD. The furious “Outer Space”, the frenzied “Running Man” and the glowering “Episode” are grand examples of the 38-year-old’s mix of Scott Walker high pretension and Doctor Who lowtech. Simultaneously stupid and very smart.
