Brushes With Happiness Moshi Moshi 8/10 London garage-blues trio’s dark night of the soul

David tattersall’s group have always seemed keen to put a spin on each of their many records, from collaborating with Billy Childish to recording acoustically around one mic. Brushes With Happiness, the first of two albums for 2018, was planned as their own Tonight’s The Night, with the inebriated trio improvising bluesy, spare backings for tattersall’s witty and personal words. the result is a hushed, spectral delight, with the title track a forlorn lament torn apart by a peerless guitar solo, and “the Little Window” a London travelogue sparked by a lost wallet “containing 500 euros in cash… I could have left it almost anywhere.”
