THE BLACK DELTA MOVEMENT

Preservation 7/10

UNCUT - - New Albums - Humberside droners’ stylishly shoey debut JOHNNy SHARP

You’d struggle to get away with it in East Yorkshire, but Matt Burr and Dominic Abbott certainly sound like they wear shades indoors and may have once attempted to grow a white man’s afro. The drone-rock furrow they plough on this debut album is redolent of the similarly hued Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on “Hot Coals”, while “Hunting Ground” offers hints of The Verve before they adopted the definite article. Later, “Let The Rain Come” evokes the spirit of Jason Pierce before he hung up his Spaceman’s helmet, but in each case there’s an immediacy and a conviction to their songs that seem to make such sleeve-borne influences a strength rather than a weakness.
