CONCORD 8/10 Throwback LA trio keep the pedal to the metal on sophomore outing

The Record Company came out of nowhere with their strippeddown 2016 debut album Give It Back To You. On the follow-up, the arrangements are far more varied and intricate, but the trio’s strong suit remains the fast-lane freeway boogie of shuddering lead track “Life To Fix”, with Alex Stiff’s bass licks leading the way, echoing their breakout single “On The Ground”, and the slidepowered howler “Make It Happen”. The Black Keys drew up the blueprint for The Record Company’s streamlined blues rock with 2010’s Brothers, but the chromed-out veneers and coiledspring grooves of their strongest tracks recall early-’70s UK hitmakers Foghat, especially on “Coming Home”, with its “Slow Ride”-like chug.
