Allways DRAG CITY 7/10 Genre-busting set from Chicago dons of the deep groove

From their Shellac-ish, post-hardcore inception in 2005 through to 2013’s definitive Threace, Cave’s evolution has been a deepgrooved and explorative one, but with their fourth LP proper they’ve really cut loose. As the title suggests, it’s freewheeling and expansive, drawing on Afrobeat, Miles Davis, ’70s cosmic rock and Chilean psych, Indian ragas and more, in six longform tracks mostly favouring a relentless motorik pulse. The results range from perky, polyrhythmic funk (“San’ Yago”) to earthbound blues drone (“Beaux”) and shimmering jam with vocal harmonies and flute (“Shasha”), but however locked the grooves, stasis never sets in: Allways is as mercurial as it is highly listenable.
