WILLIE NELSON

UNCUT - - New Albums - nIGeL wILLIAMson

My Way SONY LEGACY 7/10 willie sings Frank on his second album of 2018

One of the first to reinvent the Great American Songbook back in 1978 on Stardust, Nelson’s smoothly seasoned croon seems more of a natural fit with the Sinatra shtick than Dylan’s geriatric croak, and although his take lacks Bob’s iconoclasm, there’s something deeply reassuring about his laid-back schmooze on abiding classics such as “Night And Day” and “Fly Me To The Moon”. A jazzily upbeat “Young At Heart” makes for a revealing contrast with Dylan’s autumnal version, Norah Jones duets playfully on “What Is This Thing Called Love” and even the over-familiar title track is delivered with an appealingly reflective warmth.
