Goalkeeper carries United to famous win

Uxbridge Gazette - - SPORT -

GOALKEEPER Molly Herrington was the star as Denham United Ladies under-16s claimed an impressive 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace Academy to round off 2016.

Against a side that boasted the meanest defence and had only tasted defeat once this season, Denham made the better start with Jessica Stickley forcing a good save in the opening minute.

United had their reward shortly before half time when Echo Barrett found the net from 20 yards.

Denham doubled their lead five minutes into the second half as Sophie Hudson fed Julia Thurauf and her effort went in off the woodwork. Palace rallied but struggled to breach a strong Denham defence, superbly marshalled by Herrington until they pulled a goal back from the penalty spot.

United had the kitchen sink thrown at them in the final moments but dug deep to emerge worthy winners.

The club’s U11 Pumas claimed a victory over Alexandra Park North with Ruby Brown, Jess Poulton and Phoebe Smith all finding the target.

There was disappointment for the U13s in a Capital Girls League Cup quarter final as they were outclassed by St Josephs 5-1.

The U10s were also beaten by Bedwell Reds in an entertaining contest, with Megan Atwell and Keira Neil finding the net.
