Q

I received a lovely big pot for my birthday with six orchids in it. However, all the flowers have fallen off as I think I overwatered it. The dish under it was full of water. Please can you tell me how to look after them?

Mrs Pat Ransome

A

Yes, it sounds like you might have overdone the watering there! Orchids don’t like to sit in a dish of water – it’s better to soak the growing medium once a week but then allow it to completely dry out.

That said, it is normal for the flowers to fall off eventually, but after a period of rest orchids do bloom again.

Cut off the flowering stalks to above a node and keep watered once a week over the summer and your plant may well recover.

Over-watering is a problem for orchids
