It’s got to be tulips this week – any variety, any colour, they all add to the gaiety of gardens. Originally from the mountainous regions of central Asia, they made their way here to the UK via Turkey and the Netherlands in the 17th century.

Tulip mania in Holland led to single bulb values at their height being worth 10 times the average working man’s salary.

Thankfully today this beautiful flower is very affordable and, with more than 3,000 varieties available, there’s a colour and shape to suit every taste. Enjoy now and plant some more in November, adding drainage to heavier soils for better results.
