CARDIFF, leaders of South Wales Premier Cricket League Division One, suffered a fivewicket defeat at champions Newport yesterday.

The visitors batted first and made a total of 225-5, Yvan Grant top scoring with 66 while Alex Milton made 60.

A brilliant unbeaten 105 from Callum Taylor then steered Newport to 226-5 and a memorable triumph.

There was a tense finish at Newbridge Fields where visitors Pontarddul­ais beat Bridgend Town by six wickets.

Bridgend batted first and were bowled out for 140, Thomas Cogbill top scoring with 46 with Dan Lewis-Williams taking 3-23.

Bont then scored 141-4 in reply, Cameron Herring hitting 63 with Alex Jones and Thomas Dalton taking two wickets apiece.

Neath beat visitors Penarth by six wickets after Penarth made 221-8 with opener Scott Matthews hitting a magnificen­t 115. Matthew Pearce and Joe Parkhouse took three wickets each. Neath then made 223-4 in reply with Neil Brand scoring a brilliant 91 and Steffan Roberts 48.

Port Talbot Town were victors over visitors Ynysygerwn by five wickets. Ynys batted first and posted 226-8, Darren Thomas top scoring with 41 with Lewis Jones taking 3-31.

Port Talbot then made 227-5 in reply, Barney Huxtable hitting 77 and Daniel Rowe an unbeaten 76.

Mumbles secured a winning draw at Ammanford after batting first and making 231-6 before Ammanford made 204-7 in reply.

In Division Two, leaders Newport Fugitives went down by five wickets at bottom side Swansea.

The Fugitives batted first and were bowled out for 206, James Didcote making 47 with Hugo Laing taking 3-39 and George Parsons 3-27. A superb 64 from Jake Peake led the Swansea reply as they made 209-5, Roy Emmott picking up 3-42.

Carmarthen Wanderers secured a seven-wicket victory at Ynystawe after the home side batted first and were dismissed for just 94, Leighton Walters and Steffan James taking three wickets each.

Gareth Thomas then hit a magnificen­t unbeaten 62 as Wanderers eased to 98-3 and a comfortabl­e victory.

Tata Steel won by five runs at Panteg in a closely-contested game.
