Quins produce some magic moments to sink Wizards

Wales On Sunday - - WELSH PREMIERSHIP -

CARMARTHEN Quins stunned inform Aberavon to claim a convincing victory at the Talbot Athletic Ground in the Principality Premiership.

The Quins had lost their opening two games while Aberavon had sealed back-to-back victories, but second-half tries from Nick Reynolds and Shaun Jones saw Carmarthen earn their first win of the season.

As expected, hosts Aberavon started strongly and enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening minutes, but Carmarthen Quins managed to take the lead against the run of play.

A stray Wizards pass was seized by Quins wing Tom Williams, who sprinted to the try line to open the scoring. Jac Wilson was accurate with the resulting conversion.

Aberavon drew level when Shaun Pearce used his pace to dart over the whitewash and hit back for the hosts. Stef Williams’ conversion hit the post, but bounced through.

Despite the quick response, Aberavon were struggling to find the form that had brought them 12 tries from their first two games and the Quins went back ahead when Wilson slotted home a penalty.

Most of the play was played in the middle of the park as both sides cancelled each other out, but with half-time beckoning, Carmarthen edged further ahead when replacement Dan Jones booted over a penalty to give them an unlikely sixpoint lead at the break.

Carmarthen seemed happy to catch Aberavon on the counter and, after repelling a number of attacks, the visitors broke up the field and won another penalty, which Jones kicked successfully.

This forced the hosts to make a few changes with James Garland coming on for his 100th Aberavon appearance. But his introduction didn’t have the desired effect as Reynolds latched on to a forward kick to touch down for Quins. Jones added the conversion.

The Wizards’ frustrations were heightened further minutes later as Jones crashed over for Carmarthen’s third try of the afternoon. Aberavon threatened a late comeback after Stuart Nicholas went over, but Carmarthen held on for a morale-boosting win.

ABERAVON: Tries – S Pearce, S Nicholas; Con – S Williams.

CARMARTHEN QUINS: Tries – T Williams, N Reynolds, S Jones; Cons – J Wilson, D Jones; Pens – J Wilson, D Jones (2).
