Al­bert Ein­stein’s the­ory of rel­a­tiv­ity may have in­spired a great many en­deav­ours, but it’s prob­a­bly safe to say that a ho­tel has not, un­til now, been one of them. Join­ing Mar­riott’s Au­to­graph brand, the 195-room EMC2 oc­cu­pies a 21-storey new pile by KOO ar­chi­tects on Chicago’s Mag­nif­i­cent Mile The in­te­ri­ors by the Rock­well Group, which are meant to rep­re­sent a con­ver­gence of art and sci­ence, re­sem­ble Cap­tain Nemo’s lair: a stylish lab­o­ra­tory kit­ted out with Mon­treal artist Félix Guyon’s cop­per zoetrope in the re­cep­tion, per­fo­rated metal lanterns in the pub­lic spa­ces and, in the warm cabin-like bed­rooms, teardrop-shaped phono­graph speak­ers on cop­per poles pow­ered by smart­phones.
