Driving the dunes

Wanderlust Travel Magazine (UK) - - Queensland & Flight Centre / Promotional feature -

Waves to one side, wilderness to the other and the Sunshine Coast’s sand under your wheels... the Great Beach Drive remains a classic road trip, with the majority of the driving done on the beach itself.

The treats in store are considerable. You’ve got a good chance of spotting whales, dolphins, turtles and rare bird species. Taking your 4x4 south, the Noosa Everglades ( see right) stands as an obvious highlight. Heading up, access to the North Shore’s sands is via the car ferry from Tewantin. Once deposited on the beach, you’ll get attuned to the coloured sands and banks of untouched wilderness.

The drive also takes you up past sites such as Teewah Beach and the Cherry Venture shipwreck before arriving at Double Island Point and Rainbow Beach. Here, fishing, kiteboarding, horse-riding and surfing are all on offer – a typical Great Beach Drive menu of adventures. With 200km of sandy track ahead of you, it’s a uniquely personal way to experience the endlessly bright highlights of the Sunshine Coast.

Flight Centre can add a Great Beach Drive tour onto your itinerary; prices start from £105pp.
