Friendly grey whales, Baja California, Mexico

Charles Kinsey “San Ignacio Lagoon is a magical place as it’s one of the few places where you can interact with wild animals on their terms. Grey whales and their calves stop here before migrating to Alaska.

They’re very curious creatures and often approach small boats – the whale calves in particular seem to enjoy being splashed, touched and stroked; their skin feels like soft leather.

I used my waterproof camera with its wide-angle lens to catch the moment when one of them – in a decidedly relaxed mood – opened its mouth and exposed its baleen. This was a truly thrilling encounter!”
