Right di­rec­tion for foot­ball club?

DON­CASTER Rovers have con­firmed they are dis­cussing “a pro­posed takeover” af­ter re­ports One Di­rec­tion star Louis Tom­lin­son is in­volved in a joint bid to buy the club.

The singer, who ear­lier this week was caught up in a drug scan­dal af­ter footage emerged seem­ing to show him and band­mate Zayn Ma­lik smok­ing cannabis, is a de­voted Rovers fan.

He made his pro­fes­sional foot­ball de­but for the team’s re­serves ear­lier this year which at­tracted thou­sands of young fans to the game.

It has been re­ported he has joined forces with the club’s for­mer owner John Ryan, who is still a ma­jor share­holder, to buy the club who were rel­e­gated to League One from the Cham­pi­onship at the end of the sea­son. In a state­ment, the club said: “Fol­low­ing re­ports in the me­dia, the own­ers of Don­caster Rovers can con­firm that they have been ap­proached and dia- logue has taken place with ex­ter­nal par­ties about a pro­posed takeover.

“At this stage the club is not in a po­si­tion to com­ment fur­ther about the level and de­tail of those dis­cus­sions, but will do so as soon as it is legally pos­si­ble.

“The own­ers are look­ing to en­sure a swift res­o­lu­tion to the dis­cus­sions to en­sure that this does not im­pact ad­versely on the sum­mer trans­fer ac­tiv­ity.

“Any de­ci­sion made by the cur­rent own­ers will fo­cus on for what is best for Don­caster Rovers in both the short and long term.”

Ear­lier this month, One Di­rec­tion were named fourth in the Sun­day Times Rich List of young mu­si­cians with an es­ti­mated for­tune of £14 mil­lion each and a com­bined wealth of £70 mil­lion.
