City abor­tion rates among worst in UK

COVEN­TRY has the sec­ond high­est abor­tion rates any­where in the coun­try out­side of Lon­don.

Ac­cord­ing to the Of­fice for Na­tional Statis­tics 27.8 per cent of the 6,247 preg­nan­cies in Coven­try ended in abor­tion in 2013, the lat­est year for which fig­ures are avail­able.

This was the sec­ond high­est rate for any area of Eng­land and Wales out­side of Lon­don and the 15th high­est rate out of around 180 lo­cal author­ity ar­eas when Lon­don was in­cluded.

Across Eng­land and Wales abor­tion rates have risen marginally in the past five years from 21 per cent in 2009 to 21.2 per cent in 2013.

Abor­tion rates among preg­nant teenagers stand at an av­er­age of 50.7 per cent although teenagers in Wales are less likely to get an abor­tion than those in Eng­land.

Teenage abor­tion rates in Wales stand at 45.4 per cent com­pared to 51.1 per cent for Eng­land.

De­spite hav­ing an over­all abor­tion rate of well above av­er­age the teen preg­nancy abor­tion rate in Coven­try is ac­tu­ally slightly be­low av­er­age at 49.8 per cent.

The news comes just days af­ter Coven­try was re­vealed as one of the worst places in Eng­land and Wales for teenage preg­nan­cies.
