Fox that melted hearts of millions has died

A FOX who was mistaken for a dog and went on to became an internet sensation has died.

Dawn the fox died at her home at the Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, January 23.

Vets had told the sanctuary’s owners Dawn had developed a heart problem. She was on medication but not in any pain.

Dawn shot to fame in February 2013 after a video of her cuddling sanctuary owner Geoff Grewcock was posted on the internet.

The two minute clip has since been watched more than five million times and warmed hearts around the world.

Dawn arrived at the sanctuary with her sister Dusk nearly a decade ago.

They were found by a man walking across Warwickshire farmland in 2007.

Thinking the abandoned fox cubs were dogs he took them to the Dogs Trust at Honiley near Kenilworth, a charity caring for unwanted dogs.

It didn’t take long for Dog’s Trust staff to realise they were quite different to the normal four legged creatures they help.

It’s suspected that the cubs had probably been left by their mum because their den had been disturbed.

If the passer by had left them where he found them the mum would have come back to take them to the new den.

The two cubs were eventually taken to the Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary in Oaston Road, Nuneaton.

Unlike the foxes they usually care for the foxes coats and eyes kept changing colour and they didn’t develop a distinctive ginger coat at the same time as the other cubs at the sanctuary.

Mr Grewcock said: “We think they may have been a cross with a different breed of fox from our native one.

“Somebody near where they were found used to breed foxes for fur and had different breeds.

“Somebody let some of them out into the wild.

“That means by law we couldn’t release them so we just reared them up by hand.” It’s also unlikely that Dusk and Dawn would have been able to look after themselves because they were so tame after being hand reared.

Dawn’s sister Dusk still lives happily at the sanctuary. She also enjoys time with her human carers.
