bit.ly/lights423 NASA’S cloud-free satel­lite map of our planet shows the dis­tri­bu­tion of ar­ti­fi­cial light around the globe in 2016, tak­ing data from the clear­est night views for each month. By do­ing so, the map high­lights pat­terns of hu­man set­tle­ment. The idea is that the map will be up­dated reg­u­larly so it can even­tu­ally plot sig­nif­i­cant fu­ture changes. Use the slider at the bot­tom of the page to view var­i­ous dates and zoom in and out to see light cov­er­age in spe­cific ar­eas. You can also com­pare the 2016 map with 2012’s to see the dif­fer­ences by vis­it­ing bit.ly/2012map423.
