House of Cards This Amer­i­can po­lit­i­cal drama, adapted from the BBC’S 1990s mini-se­ries of the same name, is the show that re­ally put Net­flix on the map and paved the way for the many Net­flix orig­i­nals that fol­lowed. Now in its fifth sea­son, the drama fol­lows the story of Demo­crat Con­gress­man Frank Un­der­wood, played by Kevin Spacey.

Shooter Shooter is a classy ac­tion thriller about a re­tired Marine Corps sniper who re­turns to ac­tion in a bid to foil an as­sas­si­na­tion plot tar­get­ing the pres­i­dent. Things go wrong and he finds him­self framed for mur­der. It’s based on the 2007 Mark Wahlberg movie of the same name. The sec­ond sea­son has just been re­leased.

Ozark Star­ring (and di­rected by) Ja­son Bate­man, this thrilling 10-part crime drama is about a Chicagob­ased fi­nan­cial ad­vi­sor/money laun­derer who is forced to re­lo­cate his fam­ily to the re­mote Mis­souri Ozarks when his ar­range­ment with a Mex­i­can drug car­tel goes badly wrong. It’s just been re­newed for a sec­ond sea­son.

Black Mir­ror Char­lie Brooker’s an­thol­ogy TV se­ries de­buted on Chan­nel 4, be­fore be­ing picked up by Net­flix in 2015. The show is a se­ries of stand­alone episodes (so it’s not some­thing you need to binge watch) with a com­mon theme – a dark twist on mod­ern so­ci­ety, and tech­nol­ogy in par­tic­u­lar. It’s been de­scribed as a Mil­len­nial Twi­light Zone, which is about right.

Stranger Things A homage to movies such as The Goonies and ET, this 1980s-set sci-fi se­ries is cen­tered around a group of kids caught up in su­per­nat­u­ral events in the fic­tional Amer­i­can town of Hawkins, In­di­ana. Stranger Things was a sur­prise hit last year, and sea­son 2 is set to ar­rive in time for Hal­loween.
