Runaway Slaves runaways.gla.ac.uk
To Britain’s shame, slavery flourished in the 18th Century, but some of the people who were enslaved bravely challenged their status and ran away. This prompted many masters and owners to advertise in newspapers for their capture and return, and this website brings together more than 800 of those ads. The result is a fascinating historical resource that lets you browse or search a quick-loading database and see the original adverts along with full transcriptions, for clarity. Elsewhere, there’s a British map of nine runaway ads and three ‘for sale’ notices, as well as lots of info about the admirable work that has gone into the project.
