Zoo lights switch on as 11,000 book for fes­tive nights

Five sis­ters Zoo switched on their Christ­mas lights to a crowd of around 900 peo­ple on Fri­day as they cel­e­brated tak­ing over 11,000 book­ings for their Zoo il­lu­mi­na­tion nights to be held over the fes­tive pe­riod.

ra­dio dJ robin gal­loway turned on the Christ­mas lights which mark the start of Zoo il­lu­mi­na­tions - a night run ev­ery Fri­day, satur­day and sun­day in novem­ber and ev­ery night in de­cem­ber up to the 23rd.

the il­lu­mi­na­tions of­fer visitors the chance to see the zoo“in a dif­fer­ent light.”

speak­ing about the switch-on Les­ley Coupar, of Five sis­ters Zoo, said:“it was a very cold evening but that added to the Christ­mas feel of it. dJ robin gal­loway was there from a bout 6.30 and the lights went on at 7.30. “We were re­ally pleased with it.” the zoo had an­other rea­son to be pleased as they have al­ready taken 11,000 book­ings for this year’s il­lu­mi­na­tions which is run­ning for the sec­ond year.

the win­ter at­trac­tion of­fers the chance to see the zoo and an­i­mals at night cov­ered in thou­sands of lights with a win­ter mar­ket and ice-skat­ing rink also avail­able to visitors.

in it’s first year the il­lu­mi­na­tions at­tracted an ex­tra 10,000 peo­ple to the zoo and Les­ley said the night is good for the area. she said:“dur­ing the day you would come and see the an­i­mals and the zoo but in the win­ter vis­i­tor num­bers usu­ally drop. But now peo­ple can come to see the lovely lights. i’m proud be­cause we’re fly­ing the flag for Visit West Loth­ian so it’s al­ways good to know we’re bring ing peo­ple into the area.”

the Zoo il­lu­mi­na­tions nights are open from 6pm to 9pm and tick­ets can be booked through the zoo’s web­site.
