West Lothian Courier - - Memory Lane -

Bryan Cooper has carried the West Lothian IBC banner into the semi-finals of the Scottish Singles Championship with the club champion in super form to rattle up a hat-trick of wins in last weekend’s action at Ardrossan IBC.

The climax of the national singles takes place at Midlothian IBC over the weekend of January 5-6 and super Cooper will face Gordon McKenzie of Coatbridge with the other semi-final featuring hat-trick seeking title-holder Paul Foster MBE against 2016 champ John Fleming Jnr of Inverclyde.

Balbardie champion Gary Orr was a first round casualty making a 21-16 exit to McKenzie of Coatbridge while a quarter-final‘match of the day’ highlight in a re-run of last season’s final saw defending champion Paul Foster come from behind to edge a 21-20 thriller against Billy Mellors of East Lothian.

This Saturday heralds the opening fixtures in the Gents A and B Divisions of the Premier League and West Lothian look to hit the ground running with home carpet advantage against West of Scotland at the Inveralmond Stadium (2pm).

The opening line-up includes a debut for Balbardie champion Gary Orr who has switched allegiance while the captaincy is in the hands of stalwart figure Ian Drysdale.

West Lothian Ladies made a great start to their campaign in the East Premier League having thrilled the home support to score a 69-44 win over Headwell and this weekend travel to Methil to face East Fife.

Balbardie Ladies compete in Division One East and had the share the points in an opening 55-55 draw at home to Tweedbank while this week face an away test against Headwell.

West Lothian Seniors suffered a 65-57 defeat at the hands of East Lothian in fixture number two in the East Section B while Balbardie lost 67-54 at home to Bainfield. This week’s fixtures see West Lothian at Teviotdale and Balbardie visit East Lothian.

The draw for the 2019 Inter County Top Ten Championship sees a home tie in the prelim round for Linlithgow as they were drawn against Harlaw of Aberdeen. Livingston Rugby Club was off to Allan Glens for their Galant Conference games before the fixtures get a shake- up after the October holidays.

Unfortunately both the under-14 and 15 games were cancelled by Allan Glens due to insufficient players. The under-13s managed a home game, whilst the under-16s played away.

Their game kicked off with a very promising start, with Aaron Steel scoring the first try in the first few minutes of the game, setting a standard for the lads which did not disappoint.

It was a pretty even game with 14 points notched by both teams before half-time. The second half saw Livi step up a gear as Allan Glens ran out of steam as Livi grabbed a 26-21 win.

It was a great game to watch with four of Livi’s under-15 players taking the opportunity not to miss out on a game and showing they had the ability to advance their development.

Tries were scored by Alistair Dalling ( two), Kayne MacAulay and Steel.

Fine win Livi (left) battled to victory
