Burst main brings road disruption

Western Daily Press (Saturday) - - News -

A BURST water main brought disruption to a busy roundabout in Bristol city centre yesterday.

Pedestrians stepped out in their wellies and vehicles were seen swerving around the leak as Bristol Water employees worked to fix it.

The leak occurred on Castle Street, on the approach to the Old Market roundabout.

A spokesperson for Bristol Water confirmed that workmen went to the site and tried to repair the problem ‘live’ – that is, without switching off the mains supply.

No nearby properties – notably the city centre Bristol Marriott Hotel, which is situated on the same corner – experienced a loss of water.

A spokesperson for Bristol Water said: “There is no clear reason as to why the pipe burst – they can occur for any number of natural reasons that ultimately create a shift in or build-up of pressure in the system.”

The incident occurred on the footpath, rather than the road itself, so no official road restrictions were set up.

Water floods a busy road, but workers were soon on the scene to fix the leak, below right
