AFORMER Miss Wales has died suddenly at the age of just 39. Melanie Hughes’ husband said she was a “kind, gentle and lovely soul” and that their entire family has been left “absolutely devastated” by her death.

Mrs Hughes, from Ewloe, won the Miss Wales title in 1997 when she was Melanie Jones. She died on Sunday at the age of 39.

North-east Wales coroner John Gittins has been informed of her death.

Mrs Hughes’ husband Rick, 49, told the Daily Post: “Mel was a lovely soul. She was kind and gentle. Mel was so kind-hearted and had time for absolutely everyone. We are absolutely devastated at the loss of such a wonderful spirit and will never ever forget her.”

After winning the Miss Wales title, Mrs Hughes competed at the Miss International competition in Tokyo.

She also acted and had previously had parts in TV programmes including Coronation Street and Cold Feet.

The couple had a three-year-old son, Kaden, and Mrs Hughes was also step-mum to 16-year-old Taylor.

Mr Hughes said: “Kaden doted on his mummy. He is asking where mummy is.

“We had a holiday of a lifetime two months ago in Disney World Florida with my family and I am so glad we did as that has so many pictures with so many memories.

“Mel was better looking than all the Disney Princesses and she will always be my Miss Wales.”

The couple got together 10 years ago aDid both grew up in Holywell.

Mr Hughes said it felt they had known each other “forever”.

He said: “We got engaged at the Trevi Fountain in Rome a few years later and married in June 2011 at Greenfield Church.

“The honeymoon was in Mauritius where Mel’s mum, Jotee is from and obviously all of Jotee’s family.

“Mel had never been to Mauritius so made perfect sense to have our honeymoon there.

“We stayed at a hotel but had different days meeting Mel’s beautiful Mauritian family who she had never met. It’s an experience I will treasure.”

Mrs Hughes worked at Kingspan in Greenfield for 15 years and her husband said staff had been left devastated by her death.
