Work turning one of Wales’ leading boutique hotels into a dedicated wedding and special events venue is on track for completion this spring.

Fairyhill, the Gower-based Grade II-listed, five-star hotel, which was acquired last year by Oldwalls, has secured £500,000 towards its refurbishment work, including an extension to the west wing of the old house that will create a function space to host events.

The new-look venue, which is receiving a total investment of £1m, will host its first event on March 1.

The business has secured £200,000 of funding from the Visit Wales’ tourism investment scheme and a £350,000 loan from the Development Bank of Wales.

Andrew Hole, managing director of Wales Fast Growth 50 business Oldwalls, said: “We believe that the secret to Oldwalls’ success is dedicating ourselves to special events and weddings and we plan to inject this award-winning formula into Fairyhill. We are heavily investing in the 24-acre listed grounds, interiors and new extension to ensure the much-loved property is enjoyed for centuries to come.

“The changes will inject vital funds into the local economy too, as we are committed to using Welsh suppliers for the millionpound refurbishment project. We can’t wait to offer wedding and event visitors the opportunity to revel and enjoy the magic of Fairyhill.”

Raymond Walters, portfolio executive at the Development Bank of Wales said: “Oldwalls is already established as one of Wales’ leading wedding venues. We’re pleased to be able to support this growing local business as it transforms Fairyhill into an exciting business and wedding destination.”

Fairyhill offers an AA rosette restaurant and eight luxury bedrooms, as well as a two-bedroomed cottage and bar and lounge. Guests have included former prime minister Tony Blair, and the venue hosted the wedding of the son of late Hollywood actor Paul Newman.

The 300-year-old building has operated as an hotel since 1984.

Tourism Minister Lord ElisThomas said: “It’s great to see the progress which has been made at Fairyhill and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to support this venture in an area where tourism is such a crucial part of the economy.

“When complete in the spring, Fairyhill will, of course, be a firstclass wedding venue, but will also be a welcome addition to what Wales has to offer the conference and business market.”
