This think­ing flies in the face of US Sec­re­tary of State for Com­merce Wil­bur Ross’ state­ments in Novem­ber that whilst ne­go­ti­at­ing a UK/USA trade deal would not “take 10 years” we would have to ac­cept “lower tar­iffs and com­pro­mise” and to “change rules re­gard­ing food safety”. He also sug­gested USA ve­hi­cle safety stan­dards should ap­ply.

Any­one wait­ing for an in­stan­ta­neous an­swer to fu­ture trade is in for a long wait un­less we change our views and em­brace the Cus­toms Union.

How­ever, given the over­whelm­ing need for ex­pe­ri­enced in­ter­na­tional ne­go­tia­tors in White­hall I’m sure Mr Lewis is al­ready pack­ing his case & head­ing for Lon­don to sort this lit­tle mess out. Colin Jenk­ins Pe­nally, Tenby
