How they rated

NEIL ETHERIDGE

Made a string of extremely smart stops, though his distribution left a lot to be desired in the first half. Handled well under pressure late on and made a great stop from James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick.

LEE PELTIER

Two outstandingly brave blocks in the second half kept it at 1-0 when Southampton could have quickly turned the tables. A rock and perhaps his best performance for Cardiff.

SOL BAMBA

His passion came pouring through when he opened the scoring, but won’t be happy with the defending that enabled Southampton to level. Still, stood tall and led by example.

JOE BENNETT

Had a tough beginning but more than came into his own as the match wore on. Like Bamba, he might have done better for Southampton’s goal, but another who played a full part in this win.

CALLUM PATERSON

Struggled to contain the rampaging Ryan Bertrand in the first half and looked off the pace. But played a significant role in each of the Cardiff goals thanks to his boundless energy.

ARON GUNNARSSON

Failed to put his usual stamp on the game and was left chasing too many shadows as Southampton dominated midfield. Made a few big defensive contributions.

HARRY ARTER

Brought immediately back into the side after missing the Bournemouth win, but – his relentless pressing aside – didn’t do enough on the ball. Another whose energy was vital late on though.

JOE RALLS

Retained in midfield after good showings against Arsenal and Bournemouth and continued that here. Harried Southampton at every opportunity and looks to be growing in stature.

BOBBY DECORDOVA-REID

After his two-goal heroics against Bournemouth, he struggled to get into this game. Given poor service and hustled out of it by Southampton’s big centre-backs.

OUMAR NIASSE

Ran the channels hard, working tirelessly despite a limited amount of service. Troubled Southampton with his power and pace and looked shattered when taken off.
