‘Busiest ever summer’ is predicted

POLICE in Newquay say they are expecting to have one of the busiest summers ever as the tourist season finally got underway at the weekend.

Authorities in the area are expecting an influx of visitors over the coming weeks, coupled with an appetite for visits to the pub following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Newquay town centre was buzzing with pub-goers on Saturday evening, though there were no reports of alcohol-related antisocial behaviour or disorder.

Following the gradual relaxation of restrictions and due to the good weather, Newquay has already experienced an increase in day visitors.

Newquay Police say they are gearing up for an incredibly busy summer, despite the cancellation of the Boardmasters festival and hotels and campsites operating at reduced capacities.

“This summer is likely to be one of our busiest if not busiest summers ever,” said PC Lewis O’Mahoney.

“Uncertainty of international travel, coupled with public concern regarding Covid-19, is likely to result in bringing more tourists into Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

“Tourism is an integral part of our culture and economy and with an expected increase in the numbers of holidaymakers making more trips in the UK, we are taking proactive measures to manage any rise in demand on our policing services.

“We are adopting a robust visible approach to policing across the region during the unique circumstances of this summer.

“We have worked collaboratively with our partners to plan for and manage additional demand for all agencies as a result of increased visitors whilst still being able to provide effective services to local communities.

“Visitors are welcome, but we ask them to respect local communities and protect our environment, whilst enjoying areas of outstanding natural beauty and sites of special interest.

“The police do not have powers to enforce social distancing and so the community, whether that be those living here or those visiting, must take personal responsibility for this. Please follow advice on social distancing to avoid a second wave.”

PC O’Mahoney also praised businesses for a successful so-called ‘Super Saturday’ in the town at the weekend. “Pubs and local business have done a great job in adapting the way they operate,” he said.

Inspector Guy Blackford added that it was “great to see people out enjoying themselves in a respectful manner to others”.
