Newquay top getaway for end of lockdown
THE eyes of thousands of people across the UK are turning to Newquay now that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that the holiday industry could begin to reopen from April 12.
According to booking data from Premier Inn, the Cornish town has been crowned as the UK’s top seaside town of choice for holidays in 2021.
It is no surprise that Newquay has proven to be a hit. It has long been a firm favourite with holidaymakers thanks to its beaches, from the breathtaking sandy shores of Lusty Glaze to the surfer’s paradise Fistral Beach.
Then there is the town itself which offers heaps of restaurants and bars, not to mention the picturesque harbour that never fails to wow as a backdrop.
Cornwall itself was previously revealed as Britons’ top destination of choice for the summer, the Mirror reports. St Ives was also named one of the world’s top emerging holiday destinations, according to TripAdvisor.
The Premier Inn data also revealed that Tenby, in Wales, has seen considerable interest from would-be holidaymakers this year.
The town is renowned for its colourful Victorian houses painted in an array of pastel hues, as well as a scenic harbour and some breathtaking beaches – Castle Beach and Harbour Beach tend to be particularly popular with visitors.
It is worth noting that, at the time of writing, it is not yet clear when holidays in Wales could reopen.
Third spot in the top ten went to Skegness, which boasts an impressive array of family-friendly attractions, including a seal sanctuary and an aquarium, alongside the games to be found at Fantasy Island amusement park.
Premier Inn has already seen a sharp increase in searches for hotel stays after Boris Johnson announced his road map for easing England out of lockdown, including key dates for holidaymakers on when hotels could reopen and trips away could restart.
Although the dates could be subject to change, it has offered a glimmer of
hope for those wanting to book a holiday. In fact, a number of travel firms noted a surge in bookings within hours of the road map being announced in the House of Commons.
Premier Inn alone saw an increase of up to 400% for coastal stays, particularly for the months of May, July and August.
