Bob Marley & The Wailers Turn Your Lights Down Low (1977)
To test space
Bob Marley gets most of the credit for bringing reggae to a worldwide audience, but Island Records’ insistence on a high-gloss hi-fi sound made the traditionally rough-and-ready genre more palatable. Turn Your Lights Down Low demonstrates this beautifully: it’s such a spacious recording, with each instrument secure in its own area. Your speakers must describe each player’s position on the soundstage and, most crucially, the space between them if the intensity of the tune is to have full impact. Few songs use space as an instrument as effectively.
