The Other One
Two sisters are unexpectedly thrown together in a new comedy
Two young women, both called Catherine Walcott (Lauren Socha and Ellie White), have no idea they’re sisters until their dad drops dead in this sitcom pilot. One Cathy has a fiancé, a Duke of Edinburgh Award and a pension; the other Cat just has a pay-asyou-go phone. Both of them have always wanted a sister, just not each other. Bereavement is anything but funny, but in a new BBC2 comedy pilot, The Other One, it plunges four very different women into a new life… and gives viewers plenty of laughs.
The one-off comedy tells the story of two girls called Catherine Walcott. They are sisters Cathy and Cat, who have no idea the other exists until their father dies of a heart attack and they meet. Happy Valley star Siobhan Finneran and
The Thick of It’s Rebecca Front play their mums – Rebecca the legitimate widow Tess, and Siobhan the ‘other woman’ Marilyn.
‘Death comes up again and again in comedy, but what’s so brilliant about this show is the revelation that the deceased was a bigamist,’ says Rebecca. ‘So there are two taboos!
‘I hadn’t met Siobhan before filming, but we got on really well – she’s just so funny! So I’d love to do more with her if this becomes a series.’
Following a very tense funeral, Cathy (The Windsors’ Ellie White) and Cat (Misfits star Lauren Socha) meet up to decide where to scatter their dad’s ashes. Meanwhile, Cathy’s mum Tess deals with her grief by drinking and going straight on the dating scene. She even ends up having a fumble in a car with a handsome stranger (Neil Pearson)…
‘Neil and I found it hysterical to film,’ says Rebecca. ‘It’s very difficult to ‘do it’ in a car. We focused so much on the scene, on how drunk my character was, that we hadn’t quite allowed for the handbrake!’
