KILLED by her fiancé
Evil Ian Stewart killed his partner and dumped her body in a cesspit under their garage
When Ian Stewart called police in April 2016 to inform them his fiancée, children’s author Helen Bailey, had gone missing, he sounded beside himself with worry. Yet he was hiding a dark secret.
Wanting to cash in on her vast wealth, Stewart had suffocated Helen and dumped her body in a cesspit underneath the garage of their home in Hertfordshire.
At the same time, he killed Helen’s dog, Boris, hurling him into the cesspit, too.
Despite an extensive search, the police could find no trace of Helen’s body and, as the months passed, Stewart believed he’d got away with her murder.
Detectives regularly quizzed him, but Stewart would always remain calm and collected. He had no idea, though, that his 26 nonchalant attitude was arousing suspicion.
Those suspicions grew when, rather than help in the search for his fiancée, he went on holiday.
Eventually, it was a tip-off from a neighbour – who alerted police to the presence of the cesspit – that led police to find Helen’s body.
In February, Stewart was found guilty of murder and sentenced to a minimum term of 34 years in jail. ‘A long shadow has been cast over our lives,’ said Helen’s family in a statement. ‘But we will always remember Helen with enduring love and affection.’
