Naive newlywed Honor was full of excitement when she first landed in Aden with husband Captain Joe Martin in BBC1’s 1960s-set drama The Last Post. But this week, she’s forced to face up to tough realities when she comes across a scorpion!
Luckily her fun-loving fellow military wife Alison Laithwaite (Jessica Raine) saves the day and whisks her off to the BP Club for a day of sunbathing.
‘Honor wants to soak up this adventure,’ says War & Peace star Jessie Buckley, who plays her. ‘Through her friendships, she realises what is needed to survive the brutality of a war zone, while holding on to her open heart full of hope.’
Husband Joe (Jeremy Neumark Jones) disapproves of Alison, but he has far bigger problems. He and the military police put themselves in danger when, with glamorous reporter Martha Franklin (Essie Davis) in tow, they try to track down insurgent leader Abdul-Kadir Hakim (Aymen Hamdouchi). Will everyone make it back in one piece?
Meanwhile, back at base, Honor is trying to create the perfect home, but storm clouds are gathering…
‘These women held huge responsibility in being the emotional backbone to the men risking their lives,’ says Jessie. ‘But little does Honor know she will soon be hit with loneliness and isolation.’
