The Peaky Blinders are under threat as a new series begins...
As the fourth series opens, 1920s gang leader Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) must find a way of rescuing his family – all arrested at the end of the previous run – so he can take on his most dangerous enemy yet. Helen McCrory returns, while new faces in this series include Aidan Gillen and Adrien Brody.
PEAKY BLINDERS Wednesday, 9.00pm BBC2 Drama
Crime boss Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders are back, but after receiving a declaration of war from the US Mafia, the Birmingham criminal family knows it is facing its most fearsome enemy ever!
The arrival of Luca Changretta (Hollywood star Adrien Brody) and his men comes at the worst possible time for Tommy, who is alone and vulnerable after the rest of the Shelby family were arrested at the end of last year’s series.
‘Tommy thought he could keep going without them,’ says Cillian Murphy, who plays him. ‘But when this new threat arrives, he realises he needs his family back.’
This week’s opener begins at Christmas 1925, with Tommy preparing to celebrate the big day at home with son Charlie. Yet, when he receives a sinister message from Changretta, he springs into action.
The Mafia boss wants to avenge the murder of his father, and he’s determined to wipe out the Shelbys.
‘The Peaky Blinders are fighting for their lives,’ explains Cillian. ‘It’s the Mafia, so you can’t really get any bigger than that.’
With Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Charlie Murphy (Happy Valley) joining the cast, plus Tom Hardy (Taboo) reprising his role as crime boss Alfie Solomons, this year’s series is set to be memorable.
‘Lots of big actors want to be in the show and I was excited to hear Adrien Brody was joining,’ says Cillian. ‘There’s going to be a big showdown at some point!’
