John Simm and Adrian Lester star in a new drama about a father’s quest for the truth…
Adeadly game of blame, shame and retribution plays out on ITV this week, as a successful surgeon’s life falls apart after he’s unable to save a teenage patient.
Airing over three nights, Trauma follows top medic Jon Allerton, played by Adrian Lester, who is unable to save 15-year-old stabbing victim Alex Bowker (Albie Marber) after he’s rushed to hospital.
The teenager’s devastated dad, Dan Bowker (John Simm), holds
Jon personally responsible for Alex’s death. But could the surgeon be concealing something?
‘Jon is a confident, self-assured trauma surgeon at a major London hospital,’ says former Hustle star Adrian. ‘But nothing’s been handed to him on a plate. He’s worked hard all his life, so he’s self-made, secure and happy – until he meets Dan…’
Stumbling into the operating theatre, factory worker Dan sees Jon holding his son’s heart and thinks he sees the surgeon panic.
From then on, Dan believes Jon made a mistake and pursues the truth… ‘Dan tracks down Jon and starts to destroy his confidence,’ says Adrian. ‘It trickles through his life, and his wife and daughter know something is wrong.’
The drama, written by Doctor Foster’s Mike Bartlett, is packed with tense stand-offs, and the fact Dan and Jon are from different worlds adds to the conflict.
‘The drama asks: should we judge someone, like Dan does, for what they’ve achieved?’ says Adrian. ‘There’s no good or bad guy – they’re just people caught up in a horrendous situation.’
