The Doctor and pals arrive in the Punjab in 1947 as India is being torn apart around independence. Yaz (Mandip Gill) is attempting to discover her grandmother’s hidden history but there are demons running riot, which means the Doctor is on the case, trying to learn who they are and what it is they want…

The Doctor meddled in a turbulent time for world history when she and the gang met Rosa Parks during the American civil-rights struggles of the 1950s. Now the TARDIS goes back a further decade for more political turmoil in Punjab, India.

It’s 1947, and while the region was gaining independence from Britain, the area was riven with violence as it underwent Partition, with forced resettlements, to create both India and Pakistan.

For one time-traveller, the era is of huge interest. Yasmin Khan, played by former Hollyoaks star Mandip Gill, wants to take the TARDIS to this time to seek out her grandmother, who was living in Punjab then. Will there be some heartbreaking revelations for Yaz?

Making history

Meanwhile, the Doctor discovers demons haunting the land. Who are they and what do they want?

Mandip thinks this glimpse into India’s past shows the cultural diversity that was missing when she was growing up. ‘You didn’t see many brown people on the TV,’ she says. ‘But now there are millions of people watching me and relating to my character.’
