JaneEyre, Charlotte Brontë’s masterful novel about a destitute orphaned girl who makes her way in the world, has been a hit with the public since it was first published nearly 170 years ago. The compelling tale resounds with audiences, who are taken by its universal themes of resilience and independence. This month, a new stage production of Jane Eyre opens at the National Theatre (from 8 Sep; p. 44) following a hit run at the historic Bristol Old Vic Theatre. Director Sally Cookson’s modern telling of the tale features songs and imaginative set pieces that will have you looking at this wellknown British literary heroine in a whole new light.
