The prox­im­ity to Scot­land meant many Pres­by­te­ri­ans lived in Northum­ber­land in the 18th and 19th cen­turies. As a re­sult, bap­tisms took place in lo­cal Pres­by­te­rian churches, but not nec­es­sar­ily the near­est one to where fam­i­lies lived. All three main ar­chives – Durham, Tyne & Wear and Northum­ber­land, – have on­line guides for parish and non­con­formist hold­ings.
