The women are al­most cer­tainly mem­bers of the Vol­un­tary Aid De­tach­ment who pro­vided vol­un­teer as­sis­tance in hospi­tals in both world wars. Some worked as nurses along­side army nurses, oth­ers worked as clean­ers, cooks, clerks, maids and driv­ers. They were re­cruited through the Red Cross and St John’s Am­bu­lance.
